While not as modern or polished as rivals, the Nissan Frontier is a nice throwback to simpler times. The necessary equipment is there for challenging jobs and rugged trails, like a fully-boxed ladder frame, a stout V6 motor, and tall approach/departure angles. Its interior feels outdated, but it provides excellent usability and outward visibility. Nissan provides three trim levels and two cab sizes for easy configuration. The Frontier’s age also shows in its ride, which is rough over uneven surfaces. A next-gen Frontier is right around the corner, but those who seek an older pickup’s simplicity with new parts and a generous warranty may find the current truck nearly ideal.
The ALL NEW totally redesigned Frontier is finally here and Nissan has upped their truck game (SEE VIDEO BELOW). On the outside you will notice a new sheet metal, grill, wheels and LED lighting. On the inside you will be welcomed by leather zero gravity seats, all new 9in infotainment system, and updated materials. Under the hood is a 3.8L V6 that pumps out 310HP & mated to a 9-speed automatic transmission. Is the NEW 2022 Nissan Frontier Pro-4X a BETTER than a Tacoma TRD PRO?
You can get the Nissan Frontier in two body styles. The extended cab with a regular bed provides better cargo space. In contrast, the crew cab prioritizes interior space. It is available with a short or standard bed.
Pricing starts around $27,500 for the entry-level S trim with standard disc brakes, rugged steel wheels, a full-size spare tire, a backup camera, and stability control. Cabin features include cloth bucket seats, power windows, remote keyless entry, push-button ignition, air conditioning, cruise control, a 4-speaker AM/FM audio system, a 7-inch touchscreen, a USB input, and Bluetooth.
Stepping up to the SV brings the MSRP to around $28,000. It has upgraded exterior and interior amenities, like alloy wheels, power side mirrors, and a 6-speaker sound system. Body-color bumpers help to differentiate it.
The PRO-4X comes with mechanical enhancements for better off-road performance, priced from roughly $38,000. A 4-wheel-drive system is standard, with an electronic transfer case for low-range mode, plus a limited-slip system, Bilstein high-pressure shock absorbers, skid plates, and all-terrain tires. Interior changes include navigation, a moonroof, a roof rack, and a Rockford Fosgate premium audio system.
Nissan offers numerous functional upgrades optionally. Customers can add storage enhancements to the cargo area like tie-down cleats, a sliding toolbox, a bed divider, and a sliding bed extender. Running boards are available to help passengers get in and out of the truck. Inside, you can equip an auto-dimming rearview mirror with an integrated universal garage door opener for better convenience at home and on the road.
All Frontiers feature a 3.8-liter V6 engine and 9-speed automatic transmission, which debuted in the 2020 model. This powertrain creates 310 hp and 281 lb-ft. When properly equipped, the Frontier can tow up to 6,720 lbs.
Rear-wheel-drive is standard, while 4-wheel-drive is available for better all-terrain driving abilities. Hill Descent Control and Hill Start Assist are standard on the 4WD model. The EPA estimates fuel economy of around 19 mpg in mixed driving, which is low for its class.
